Hi there all you old ex Sheffield Officers
The picture towards the bottom of the page http://www.narposouthyorkshire.co.uk/c.do?category=90 appeared on the BBC South Yorkshire Local History web site as an unidentified picture of 'Old Sheffield'. Do any of you recognise the scene? It has been suggested by two old 'B' Div men (Mike Bailey served 58/59 and Dave France Ex PC441) who have left their comments on the site, that it is a view of Water Lane with the old Charge Office and cells mid left of picture and the old CID offices opposite. I agree it looks very similar - the two figures in the picture appear to be standing at the bottom of the old Charge Office steps! I am not however entirely convinced, I started there in 1962, and whilst the photo is obviously a lot older than that, I do not remember a) the high wall attached to the side of the Charge Office b) the lane to my recollection had a large yard to the side of the Charge Office from which amongst other things access was gained up a fire escape to the Tailoring Dept.c) I cannot either see a break in the building line where Castle St would cross. The lane seems to be much longer at this point than I recall. Gentlemen your views please.
Regards Derek Hickinson

The photo of old Sheffield, is I believe Water Lane, the Charge Office to the left, and the sign just visible on the right is the Hen & Chickens PH Cheers John Wilson

John As I recall the 'Hen & Chicks' was down the next lane - Castle Green - just before the entrance to the old Police HQ Derek

Derek, I accept there are similarities to the old Water Lane, but if those are the Charge Office steps where the figures stand, then just beyond them shouldn't there be a gap in the building line where the outside courtyard existed for stores and the iron staircase which led to SOC Department. I seem to remember the SOC van being parked in there when I was a cadet!

Derek,
Just a further thought after looking at the photo again. I think the height of the building on the left would match that of the old Charge Office. I recollect having entered (having negotiated those very slippery steps!) there were at least two floors of cells above aground. But on a second look, perhaps where the two figures are standing is the entrance to the Lost and Found property office where I served with two ladies whose names I now forget.

I think its the lane beside the former Fire Station on Rockingham Street - Rockingham Lane? I used to live at the Fire Station as a child so know the area well though I only worked in the area as a Cadet in the early 60s David Arnold ExPC 380

Derek Sleath/Dave Arnold Thanks for that. I think that you, like me Derek, think that it is similar but not really what we remember. It would be interesting though Dave if you have any old pics of the fire station you could post so that we could all compare.

Hi Bob, thanks for that and we have resumed service now. I have looked through all my books of old Sheffield and am convinced that the photo is NOT Water Lane. I don't recall any 5 storey buildings on Water Lane, which I frequented regularly between l951 up to retiring in l976. Unfortunately I cannot place the photo either. Please keep me informed in any developments as this is quite an interesting subject and I will keep looking. Cheers Don Caley

Hello Derek
The picture concerned is without doubt Water Lane. You will find this picture on page 76 of a book titled "A Sheffield Camera" "Picture Memories" by J R Wrigley ISBN 0 9534267 6 4
The book can be obtained at the Sheffield Shop Surrey Street.
Do you remember our marathon snooker games at West Bar?
Best Regards Jack Barker PC 305 ret.

Hi Jack Wow it's great to hear from you! It would be wonderful if you could get in touch for a chat - if you contact Niagara club or Roy Shenton then you should be able to obtain both my Email and home phone number (not in book) Yes, I do remember those days and a lot more too!! Thanks for the information Jack I will check it out and then pass is on.

I too think that the picture has some similarities to the old Water Lane but reservations as to whether it is. It could also be Lambert Street behind West Bar nick. Although the left hand side has been redeveloped a number of times, the right hand side of Lambert St looks identical to the pic on this site, including the 'goods' opening, correct number of windows etc.
